SoundCloud Allows DMs Between Artists and Fans
SoundCloud now allows users to send and receive DMs on their iPhones. This means that regardless of the device you’re using, whether it’s Web, Android, or iOS, fans and artists can initiate direct conversations via SoundCloud.
As a longtime independent artist and cheerleader for all artists this was music to my ears. A direct connection between fans and artists is something that has been highly requested on both sides.
To share a personal story from back in 2017. I had just dropped the debut album with my buddies under our group Date Night. We uploaded the tracks directly to our SoundCloud and thought nothing of it. Fast forward a few months and while checking the DM’s there was a message regarding playing at a festival in Palm Springs.
Not only does this open the door to incredible (and potentially life changing) opportunities like gigs and collaborations but it also creates a direct connection to fans and super fans.
Once a fan has messaged you, there is now an opportunity to respond and share links to newer music, playlists and even let them know about upcoming shows with a personal invite.
Recently on the SoundCloud blog they shared an inspiring story of Elohim, who connected with Louis the Child through a SoundCloud DM. Their collaboration on the track “Love is Alive” changed the trajectory of Elohim’s career, and the song has since been played on stages worldwide.
I know you are probably itching to dive in and start messaging so here are some practical ideas to get you started:
- Reach out to someone directly from their profile page. If there’s an artist you admire, don’t hesitate to click the “Message” button on their profile and let them know.
- Share your work in progress by sending a private link. This is a convenient and reliable method to share a private track or playlist. Whether it’s a beat you’ve been neglecting or a demo you’re workshopping, feel free to DM it to someone for feedback, or possibly to turn it into a collab.
- Highlight music you’ve discovered and show off your music taste by sending your latest music discovery directly from the DMs.
- Customize your email notification preferences for new DMs under Account Settings -> Notifications.
- It’s worth noting that you can also take control of who can message you under Settings -> Privacy. If you prefer to receive messages only from people you follow, you have the option to set it up that way.
What do you think of this feature? Have you tried it out yet? Do you have any DM success stories? Sound off in the comments!
