Be your authentic self online, all the other avatars are taken!

The first piece of advice I give to anyone asking for pointers on LinkedIn or other “professional” network apps is to be your authentic self. Being a “professional” doesn’t mean you have to be void of all personality. I have a pretty fancy title for my day job, but I am also a bit of a nerd, have a pretty distinct Aussie accent and love a cheeky joke — ideally paired with a pint or two. I also make a lot of mistakes and wear comfy clothing like shorts and t-shirts when working from home.

These are the things that make me personable and relatable. Contrary to popular opinion, they don’t take away from my professionalism.

Being myself helps others feel comfortable enough to be themselves as well. They help me create authentic connections that lead to real friendships on this platform because it humanizes me. When I see someone else showing their personality too, it draws me to their profile. In a sea of professional headshots and polished posts, real people with real stories stand out.

So, be yourself. All the other avatars are taken.
